About Bloodhounds

General Information
This breed originated from Belgium for hunting wild boar. They are the oldest known breed of Hound; all hounds were bred up from the bloodhound. This dog is claimed to be the father of all scent and hunting hounds of today. Bloodhounds were used for tracking wounded game which escaped from the hunter. They were also used for tracking poachers, runaway slaves, convicts, and thieves, but never attacked anyone. They are known to NEVER attack their prey.

The bloodhound is one of the most effectionate and docile breeds around, and also very powerful. The average height for the adult dog is 26" and for bitch it is 24", which can vary an inch or two. Their average weight ranges from 80-110 pounds. The average lifespan is between 9 and 11 years.

The bloodhound is a clean dog, having a smooth coat which is easy to maintain. Their toenails should be clipped every two weeks and their long, heavy ears need to be cleaned weekly. Their water intake needs to be controlled because they could get a gastric torsion (bloat) which can cause other problems. It is best to avoid soy products and other gas causing substances. Give them two or more smaller meals daily instead of one large. Exercise should always be limited right after any meal.

The bloodhound is unique and intriguing. This is a very versatile and somewhat active dog. You and your bloodhound can track, trail, participate in the obedience and agility ring, and try the show or "conformation" ring. The bloodhound is not a breed that wants to please as much as it wants to be pleased. (Their motto is, "What's in it for me?")

But... owning a bloodhound is like having a comedian in the family! Socialize as much as possible. They need to enjoy many new sights and sounds, and make lots of human friends. This is a must, for a bloodhound.

Temperament
In temperament he is extremely affectionate, neither quarelsome with companions nor with other dogs. His nature is somewhat shy, and equally sensitive to kindness or correction by his master.
